They’re Right

Posted by Chris Liebenthal on November 27, 2009

It’s not often that I agree with Republican Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell.

But when he said “the battle has just begun” after the Senate historically voted to open debate on the most sweeping health care reform legislation in our lifetime, I have to agree.

Here’s why: Insurance companies are fighting tooth and nail to protect the status quo and their ability to keep raising premiums and deny care. They’ll stop at nothing to kill reform. They’ve already launched dishonest attack ads targeting House Democrats who voted for the change that we put them in office to deliver, but we’re not backing down. AFSCME and Americans United for Change are airing these TV ads to let these pro-reform Democrats know that middle-class working families are with them.

After you watch our new TV ad, I hope you’ll also sign up for one of our upcoming Health Care Reform Q&A sessions. There is a lot of misinformation out there, so we’re hosting 8 exclusive members-only calls from December 1 – 3 to set the record straight. With so much on the line, AFSCME members need to know what’s in it for them. Our health care policy experts will be on hand to answer your questions during these sessions.

As we march towards history of passing health care reform, we’ll need you with us. The current Senate bill is good but needs to be improved. At the end of the debate, legislation must include a robust public option to compete with private insurance plans and keep them honest, it must include an effective employer mandate, and it can’t pay for reform by taxing middle-class health plans that we’ve fought hard — and worked hard — to earn.

beth, thanks for all that you’ve done to get us this far.

The Senate is likely to begin debate and vote on its bill sometime after Thanksgiving. I’ll be sure to keep you updated as soon as we need you to call or email your senators and demand that they side with working families instead of insurance companies. In the meantime, I hope you’ll sign up for an exclusive call with our health care experts:

Thanks and Happy Thanksgiving,

Charles M. Loveless
Director of Legislation
