Going Green Brings In The Green

Posted by Chris Liebenthal on May 13, 2010

From Milwaukee County First:

From a press release from Supervisor Marina Dimitrijevic:

Milwaukee County Supervisor Marina Dimitrijevic joined with representatives from Focus on Energy, Johnson Controls and the Metropolitan Milwaukee Sewerage District (MMSD) to reveal a number of environmentally friendly upgrades recently completed at the Milwaukee County Zoo. The upgrades were performed as a result of the “Green Print” legislation, which was adopted in 2007.

At the event, Supervisor Dimitrijevic and Zoo administrators accepted a $100,394 check, from Focus on Energy to Milwaukee County, for the energy efficient upgrades completed at the Zoo. The grant recognizes the reduced energy consumption achieved through a partnership with Johnson Controls. Improvements included upgrades to mechanical systems, building automation controls, lighting and water conservation control systems throughout the Zoo complex. The upgrades incorporated low-flow sinks, aerators, toilets and valves, new energy-efficient boilers, heat recovery systems, and upgraded water supply controls in several exhibits that turn off water when not needed.

“This required close work between Milwaukee County and Johnson Controls to ensure the quality of the exhibits and the safety of animals was protected,” Supervisor Dimitrijevic said. “As a result, Milwaukee County expects to save more than 100 million gallons of water and more than 700,000 kilowatt hours of electricity every year.”

The Metropolitan Milwaukee Sewerage District (MMSD) was also recognized for providing a grant to Milwaukee County for a rainwater harvesting and reuse project.

Congratulations, as well as our thanks, goes out to Supervisor Dimitrijevic who has led the charge in making all of Milwaukee County more efficient and environmentally friendly.  The extra money doesn’t hurt either.
