Another Holiday Weekend Trashes The Park

Posted by Chris Liebenthal on July 6, 2010

From Milwaukee County First:

Over the Memorial Day weekend, the parks around Milwaukee County got trashed.  Even Scott Walker himself admitted that there wasn’t enough staff to keep up with the trash removal after he laid off the majority of parks workers in a grandstanding maneuver.

During an interview with WTMJ-TV reporter Tom Murray, Walker said that there would be more people, in the form of “seasonal workers,” to deal with the problem.  Walker, and his Parks Director, Sue Black, said that they would be up to full staff in a couple of weeks.

As is too often the case with Scott Walker, what he says and what really happens are two different things.

Wrapping up the Independence Day weekend, Channel 58 is reporting that there was again problems, most notably at Estabrook Park.  If anything, the video taken for this report makes it look even worse than it did during the Memorial Day weekend.    The original report went on to say the highway workers are being pulled off of their duties to help pick up the garbage.

As with the Memorial Day problems, it should be noted that people should be expected to pick up after themselves.  Common courtesy would call for at least that much.

But as was also pointed out from the Memorial Day weekend problems, if Scott Walker, the elected leader of Milwaukee County, doesn’t respect our parks, how can we expect anyone else to?

This is just another item in the long list of failures that we are seeing as Walker continues to put his ideology and his political aspirations before the best interests of the community or even the duties of the job he was elected to do.
