As The County Literally Crumbles

Posted by Chris Liebenthal on October 30, 2010

From Milwaukee County First:

The results of an audit regarding building inspections in Milwaukee County were released today.  As one might surmise, they were not pretty.

According to an article from Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, they can be pretty much summarized in a few paragraphs:

About two-thirds of 521 county structures have [not] been reviewed in more than a decade since the county adopted its Web-based property management system, the report by Auditor Jerome Heer says.

While information on repairs is incomplete and sometimes outdated, the report lists $193 million in recommended repairs to county buildings, including about $97 million considered currently or potentially critical. A December audit also listed more than $200 million in deferred maintenance at park structures.

Among the buildings that haven’t been reviewed: Mitchell International Airport, the Children’s Court Center, the War Memorial Center and the Marcus Center for the Performing Arts.

The report includes photos and descriptions of problems at those and other places, including an unsafe concrete canopy over the entrance at the Washington Park Senior Center, 4420 W. Vliet St., water leakage warping floors at the War Memorial Center and hardboard siding detaching from the outside of the Wilson Park Senior Center, 2601 W. Howard Ave.

The actual report also shows that despite spending money on a computer program created to help track and monitor inspection and repair records, this system was underutilized, mostly due to lack of staffing, and is now considered unreliable.

In other words, to preserve his political aspiration and ideology, Scott Walker has cut corners, if not just entirely ignored the whole thing, when it came to do building inspections and proper maintenance.

Immediately after the tragedy at O’Donnell Park, Walker loudly proclaimed that there was no deferred maintenance and that everything was up to snuff, including having regular safety inspections.

This shows that statement to be utterly and unequivocally false.

By putting his political ambitions first, Walker has severely endangered public safety and has put the tax payers in harm’s way.  This is not leadership, this is another example of his malfeasance.
